French Courses
As all the courses take place in French, a sound
understanding of the French language is essential.
Advanced French classes are given at the INPL linguistic
training centre (CAFOL), within the framework of the
SOCRATES agreement.
A self-assimilation French language training facility is
provided by the Pôle Universitaire Européen.
Accommodation
The International Relations Office of INPL looks after
reserving accommodation for Erasmus students in the
university residences run by the CROUS. A university
residence accommodation request should be filled in and sent
back to the International Relations Office of INPL, who will
forward it on to CROUS.
The CROUS runs nine traditional style university residences
in Nancy and the surrounding area (furnished 9 m2 rooms with
wash-hand basin in the room and communal sanitation
facilities on each floor). There are no kitchen facilities
in most Halls.
Rent : around 122 € per month. A guarantee deposit of around
137 € is requested on arrival. This will be returned on your
departure after any deduction for possible damages.
The CROUS also has furnished studios in residences for
students staying at least 12 months. Reckon on between 275 €
and 385 €. for this type of studio.
The Ecole des Mines de Nancy and ENSIC have unfurnished
studios reserved for their students in residences close to
their schools.
The INPL Residence (264 unfurnished studios) is located on
the Brabois campus. Rent is around 350 € per month.
A Housing insurance (called « Assurance Risques Locatifs »)
is compulsory (the cost per year is about 38 € for a studio
flat and 25 € for a room) in a student residence hall. This
can be purchased from student insurance organisations (MGEL,
Mutuelle des Etudiants, etc.).
Restaurant facilities
8 restaurants, 6 brasseries, 1 pizzeria, one Chinese
restaurant and a pancake house belonging to the university
are open from 11.45 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and from 6.45 p.m.to 8
p.m . Meal vouchers are sold in books of 10 at the checkouts
of the university restaurant (called “ RU ”) on presentation
of the student’s card. Payment is in cash. As from 1 August
2002, the tariff is 2.40 € per voucher.
Health cover and other
insurances
Throughout their stay in France, European students must have
medical cover. You should therefore have in your possession
form E128 (or E111), obtained from the social security
organisation of your country of origin. In the absence of
this document, students are required to take out a health
insurance plan in France. As an indication, the annual
subscription covering health costs or possible
hospitalisation is around 174 €. You can subscribe when
enrolling at INPL.
Medical care : Visits to the doctor and
medication have to be paid there and then : 20 € for a
general practitioner, and 30 € (and more) for a specialist.
To have your costs reimbursed, you should forward your
health care form, complete with the medication
identification labels and doctor’s prescription, to the
International Relations Office of the CPAM, along with a
bank or post office details slip (RIB or RIP) and the
original of your E128 (or E111).
The E128 form covers up to 70% of medical costs. The last
30% can be covered by a separate insurance which you can buy
from student insurance organisations (MGEL, Mutuelle des
Etudiants, etc.). You can subscribe when enrolling at INPL
(cost : around 150 € per year).
You must have a civil liability insurance
which covers you for any damage you may cause to a third
party in your everyday life. This can be obtained from the
same student insurance organisations (MGEL, or Mutuelle des
Etudiants) or from an insurance company or when enrolling at
INPL (cost : around 12 € per year).
Residence formalities
If you stay in France more than three months for your
studies, you must request a residence permit from the Hôtel
de Police (police headquarters), within the eight days
following your arrival. You should have the following items
ready :
When you have
gathered all these items, you need to go to the Foreign
Student Center (« Guichet Unique d’accueil ») at the Pôle
Universitaire Européen, 34 Cours Léopold, Nancy, who will
make appointment with the Hôtel de Police.
You obtain the residence permit some eight weeks after
making the request.
